Phil Ivey Back in Action at Commerce Casino

by Lou on February 26, 2012

Phil Ivey’s last poker tournament in the United States was the Bay 101 Shooting Stars, March 2011 main event.  Then came Black Friday and Ivey was absent from the tables until last fall, when he played in Macau, and more recently won more than $2.1 million by capturing the recent Aussie Millions super high roller, $250,000 buy-in event at Melbourne’s Crown Casino.

But he reappeared in the United States to compete in the World Poker Tour’s $10,000 buy-in LA Poker Classic at Commerce Casino.  And after Day 1, Ivey was firmly lodged in fifth place.

While you can’t take too much from a Day One performance, a number of name pros, such as Daniel Negreanu, Vanessa Selbst, Andy Frankenberger, Bertrand Grospellier, and Olivier Busquet all failed to survive the opening day.

This event still has a ways to go, but it’s nice to see Phil Ivey back in action.
